Hi
Can anyone offer advise regarding the differences between the 348 and the 355. Obviuosly the 355 is more expensive and modern (+80hp) however I am wondering if the 348 does'nt offer better bang-for-your-buck ? Has anyone out there owned both ? I have read that the 348 is difficult to drive on the edge however I do not intend to race. Are there any discernible maintenance differences ?
Thanks

I looked at 348s briefly before deciding to get a 355. I don't want to insult anyone's car, but I don't think too many people will disagree that the 355 is a vastly improved car over the 348. Also, 348s aren't THAT much cheaper than 355s right now. The 348 has even more "pendulum" oversteer than the 355, which is a go-kart of a car!! The 355's oversteer is enormous fun, (if a little dangerous) while the 348 seemed like throwing darts tail first!! As you noted, the 355 is vastly more powerful, and the return to a proper Ferrari tail light treatment and the elimination of the side strakes really makes the car's styling for me. I mean no disrespect to 348 owners out there; mine is a personal opinion. Even though I now have an '01 550, I miss my 355 Berlinettas, particularly my '95. I hope to be able, in the near future, to afford one just to keep for its beauty and passion!! Brad

Excellent response "efwun". As with any decision of this type, go out and test drive the two models before making any decisions.

I have a 94' 348 spider, and love it. It's my 1st Ferrari, and I don't race. I like to go for a ride on a saturday or sunday morning (less traffic in NJ). I like the look of the strakes, makes it look more distictive. The 355 is a superior car, but for the price approx. $40,000 for a 97 355 spider (for a 12k mile car),you can't beat the 348 spider. I drive the car about 80 hrs.a year, thats 500 bucks less an hour for a 1994 348 spider with 12,800 miles. Thats just my opinion, Good luck!

I would like to get a 348TS as a driver and want to know what I should expect, cost, maintenance etc and is there a particular model year better than others for a driver.

Can you tell me how much I can expect to pay for a 348ts in good condition...year and mileage, say 50,000 to spend.

Five Valves per cyl and underbody aerodynamic venturi-like effects made the 355 a real departure from the rudimentry 3-series Ferrari ala 348.

I just picked up an 89 348 ts with 22k miles yesterday for $47k. It is great. Quick, distinctive, and the sound of full throttle accelleration with the windows down is addictive. I have read that the 348's from late 1990 on with the Bosch Motronic 2.7 injection is better than the first 348's made. I know of a 1991 348 TS with 19k miles on it for $46k locally. It is a great price but not the color I desired. You can find it by going through carfax.com. I found it after running a search on the 348 I ended up buying. Anyway, style is a personal preference. I don't plan to race people with 355's, so looking stylish and having fun are the main aspects of Ferrari ownership to me. If you could scratch up a few extra dollars, I think the 348 spyders are underpiced right now compared to the 348 TS / TB. My dad just picked up a 1994 348 spyder with 27k miles for $55k. Good Luck!
