Ok. I've been a die hard Porsche enthusiast until the introduction of the 996 and haven't owned a Ferrari since the mid eighties, (512BB). I'm finally ready again but faced with the decision of which to purchase. In either case it will definately be pre-owned. I understand that these two models couldn't be any more different and that this decision is purely personal. I live in So. CA and intend to actually drive this car 2-4 times a week or 5K miles a year. I would appreciate hearing any comments regarding ownership and why I should consider one vs. the other.

550, a tremendous buy right now. A 99-01 with all the right stuff 145-165K for a car that someone paid 250K for. Don't forget color selection, vitaly important on either car.

Interesting comment on colors. Which colors does the market view most favorably and how much does it impact value?

Tough to comment on colors without sounding offensive to some. I'd ask a dealer for some input regarding values they place on colors. In my experience, resale red, black, or silver are usually safe.

Hello!
Interesting topic, I was asking my self this same question today and found this thread. If you have gotten more wise please since crating this thread please share it with us who still don't know wether a V8 360 or a V12 550 is the best buy.
550 and 360 are close in price level when looking at used ones for sale. A 550 can though be found for 10k less or maybe more.

I guess mechanical expenses could be more expensive if you had the 550 to fix, also with sparepartprices, but on the other hand the 360 if a special itself too so hard to tell but interesting to know. After 20k milage or so certain service jobs have to be taken care of. Each model has has different limits of milage before next servicestop and also different prices. I'm not aware of any of theese numbers, but it is importaint to be aware of before buying.

FYI, Yellow I'm hearing is a disaster on a 550 but not as bad on a 360. Red metallic is also not so good. 550's do best with Red/Tan, Silver/ Black, Black/Black. Equally a disaster is the wrong interior color. Silver W/ Bordeaux is a tough sell or Blue/Blue etc. With a limited amount of buyers who needs obstacles. A dealer told me that after 10 months of not being able to sell a Pristne White 355 he finally color changed to yellow.Clearly a last resort! To me it seems sacreligious to w anything but a RED Ferrari.

just to throw in on an old topic...

the 550 for sure!!! and dark grey with a red interior is luscious! don't like the 550 in the bright colors, grey or black is it.

They are both great cars, I own a 360M. I personally don't get the same feeling from a 550 than I get from a 360. It is light weight with perfect balance of power, handling and brakes. If you plan to do spirited driving 360M is a pure joy but if you want to do lond distance travel 550 is al ot more comfortable.

Drew:
I am also a Porsche man, but love the prancing horse. I have a 996TT and 356 speedster. I have become a bit tired of my Turbo because they have over engineered the experience from the car for the masses. I would go from the Turbo to the 355 and have such a great time....So..

Not sure if this help you but I have owned a 355 spider and now have a 550. The larger item to consider is whether you will drive the car daily or just 1-2 times a week. The 550 is a daily driver. I would not say the service costs are any higher on a 550 as I went through a similar exercise when moving out of the 355.

Put it this way, and this is not to offend any 360 owners because I love that model as well. The 355 & 360 are boy racers. The 550 is more civilized as it is a GT. It is best to understand that you may not grab all the attention in the 550 but you will eat up a 360 when the time comes to open them up.

Put a Tubi on either of them. Many people would love to have your problem!

Cheers.
