I currently have my 1980 308 GTSi (with 16,500 mi) at a respected shop for a major service. Shortly before bringing the car to the shop, I have been having some grinding problems shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. The mechanic flushed the trans fluid (which looked rust colored) and replaced the fluid with Redline trans fluid without additives. This did not help the shifting problem. I am contemplating having the engine pulled, replacing the trans syncros, replacing the clutch pp&tob, as well as having the "major service" done. Is there anything you can think of to check before going to this trouble and expense? Also, (I know this is a tough question) what is a reasonable price to expect to pay for all of this, as I am not a man of unlimited resources? Thank you!!

That's pretty low mileage for such problems. Of course, it depends a lot on how it has been driven. It's characteristic for 308s and 328s to have trouble with the 1 - 2 upshift when they're cold. I shift directly from 1st to 3rd until I see some oil temperature begin to register.

If the clutch is not fully disengaging it will cause rough gear shifting. Have you checked the clutch adjustment?
