The good thing about OBD 1 and OBD 2 is that the codes are standardized. If you buy a generic scan tool, it will read the codes, and it knows what they mean. For instance, all powertrain related codes start with a "P" followed by four digits. P0300 means a cylinder misfire, regardless if the car is a Honda, a Ford or a Ferrari.

Of course, if a manufacturer has a component or system that is completely unique, they will have a unique code for it, but I'm pretty sure your car has Bosch fuel injection that's a pretty generic system.

Any Auto Parts store will have OBD 1 and OBD 2 scan tools. The data link connector is standardized, and is supposed to be located on the left side of the dash near the driver's left knee. The regulation specifies that it should be easily visible to a crouching technician. There are also plenty of companies online who sell generic scan tools.

This is a rare instance where a government regulation actually made our lives easier!
