2006 F430 with 10k miles. Shifting 1st through 5th is no problem. Getting into 6th is near impossible. Couple of questions, I'm new to this car. (Had an '82 308 GTSi) Basically when you try to shift into 6th it just won't go. The only two ways are to let the engine speed drop, double clutch and it will drop in down near idle. The other way has to be under no load and time the engine speed perfectly and one out of 10 tries it will slip in. Are there any possible adjustments or is this going to be a syncro? I thought syncros were shared, like 5th and 6th together but shifting into 5th is no problem....thanks

Your car is shifting like an unsynchronized transmission, which makes it likley that 6th gear synchro is worn out. The sliding synchro ring is probably shared between 5th and 6th, but the synchronizer surfaces are separate...5th on one side of the ring and 6th on the other. It's normal for the transmission to want the engine revs to fall before an upshift, but the synchromesh should be able to compensate without your having to double clutch like an old semi-truck transmission!

This symptom can also be caused by the clutch not fully disengaging, but the problem wouldn't be isolated to 6th gear if that were the case. Still, checking the clutch adjustment is a lot easier than rebuilding the transmission, so it's worth checking.

Thanks for your help, I was afraid of that. I just bought the car from the local dealer. Actually test drove the car twice but never had the opportunity to shift into 6th. I had owned the car for 9 days before I finally got away from in town traffic and could get into 6th...then the surprise....don't even want to ask what a trans overhaul will cost.....

thanks again....
