does anyone know if I can install 220/55/vr390 on my 1982 mondial instead of 240/55/vr390 that are on the car now,and what would be the difference between the two.

Your proposed tires will be smaller in circumference that the original. So your speedo and odometer will be higher than actual, because the instruments measure revs of tires and assume a certain circumference.

Circumference = pi * diameter

Rough estimate of diameter (D) from

D = wheel diameter + 2 * sidewall height = wheel diameter + 2 * (tire width * aspect ratio)

Original = 390 mm + 2 * (240 * 55%) = 654 mm
New = 390 + 2 * (220 * 55%) = 632

~3.4% error
